Watch Out for these Problems During your Fosamax Treatment

With sales of more than $1 billion every year, Fosamax is one of the most widely used drugs in the United States. Unfortunately, backlash come in the form of complaints about the unwanted effects of the drug staining the reputation of the drug and its manufacturer – Merck. For this reason, FDA medical advisers recommend stronger Fosamax warnings especially on its leaflets.

Fosamax belongs to a group of drug collectively known as bisphosphonates which are often prescribed to prevent or treat osteoporosis for both men and women. Although the drug has been made famous for its effectiveness, it has also gained notoriety for causing severe side effects making the use of the drug requiring much precaution. Ponder on the information below as you begin your Fosamax therapy.

Fosamax is known to cause serious side effects which include:

Esophageal problems
The drug is known to cause irritation, inflammation or ulcers in the esophagus that may sometimes cause bleeding. To reduce the risk of esophageal problems, take the drug exactly as prescribed. It is important to inform your health care provider immediately when you start to manifest chest pain, new or worsening heartburn, or difficult or painful swallowing.

Low level of calcium in the blood (hypocalcemia)
Fosamax may lower your calcium level in the blood. Furthermore, if one has hypocalcemia before the therapy, it may worsen when he or she starts taking Fosamax. Notify your health care provider immediately when you manifest symptoms of hypocalcemia which include:

Confusion or disorientation
Irregular heartbeats
Numbness or tingling sensation in your fingers, toes, or around your mouth
Spasms, twitches, or muscle cramps

Oftentimes, patient with hypocalcemia are given calcium and vitamin D supplements by their doctor during therapy.

Bone, joint, or muscle pain
Some people who took Fosamax felt severe bone and muscle pain as well as swelling in the joints of the ankles, hands, and/or feet.

Severe jaw bone problems (osteonecrosis of the jaw)
The practice of good mouth care is essential during the treatment with Fosamax as osteonecrosis of the jawbone (ONJ) may develop. Furthermore, you may be asked by your physician to visit your dentist prior to therapy.

Unusual thigh bone fractures
Some long-term users of the drug have developed an atypical fracture in the bone accusing the drug for causing such effect. Furthermore, this problem has triggered Fosamax femur fracture lawsuits against the company drug Merck.

It is always best to see your doctor for your concerns as well as your treatment – more importantly if you begin to develop these health issues.
